Torque is twisting force
Torque is a measure of rotational force. Imagine using a wrench on a bolt: pushing harder on the handle produces more turning force. An engine produces torque at the crankshaft, and that torque is passed through the transmission and final drive to the wheels.
When people say a car has strong low-end torque, they are usually talking about how much twisting force the powertrain can produce at relatively low engine speed.
Horsepower includes engine speed
Horsepower is related to torque and rotational speed. An engine can make a similar amount of torque at different engine speeds, but the amount of power it produces changes with speed. That is why a high-revving engine can make substantial power without producing an enormous peak torque number.
Different markets may quote power in horsepower, PS or kilowatts. The units differ, but they are all describing power.
Why the gearbox matters
The engine does not drive the tyres directly. The transmission changes the relationship between engine speed and wheel speed. Lower gears multiply torque at the wheels, which is why a car can pull away strongly without the engine itself producing an enormous torque figure.
This is also why comparing two engines only by peak torque can be misleading. You need to consider where that torque arrives, how long it stays available and what the gearbox does with it.
What you feel in normal driving
Around town, a broad torque curve can make a car feel relaxed because the engine does not need to rev hard for ordinary acceleration. On a highway, power available at higher engine speeds becomes important when the car needs to keep accelerating at speed.
Vehicle weight, gearing, tyres and traction matter too. A powerful engine in a heavy car can feel very different from a lighter car with a smaller engine.
How to compare cars
When comparing specifications, look at peak torque, the engine speed where it occurs, peak power, vehicle weight and transmission type. A power curve is even more informative than two isolated numbers.
The useful question is not “Which number is bigger?” It is “How does this powertrain deliver its output over the range I actually drive?”
