What engine oil does
Inside an engine, bearings, piston rings, camshafts, timing components and other parts move against or around each other at high speed. Oil creates a controlled film between surfaces and reduces direct metal-to-metal contact.
The oil also carries heat away from areas that may not be cooled directly by coolant. Additives help control oxidation, deposits, corrosion and contamination.
Understanding viscosity
Numbers such as 0W-20, 5W-30 and 5W-40 describe viscosity behaviour at different temperatures. The “W” relates to winter performance, while the second number describes viscosity at operating temperature under the relevant testing standard.
A thinner oil is not automatically better, and a thicker oil is not automatically safer. The correct grade depends on the engine design and manufacturer specification.
Specification matters more than brand
Two oils with the same viscosity grade can still have different performance specifications. Manufacturers may require a particular API, ACEA or manufacturer-specific approval. Those requirements can be important for emissions systems, turbochargers, timing components and warranty conditions.
For that reason, check the owner's manual or official service documentation before choosing oil.
Oil level and oil consumption
Checking the oil level is one of the simplest maintenance tasks, but the correct procedure varies. The vehicle may need to be parked level and left for a certain amount of time before checking the dipstick or electronic level system.
Some engines consume more oil than others. A noticeable increase in consumption, smoke or a low-oil warning deserves investigation rather than repeated top-ups without finding the cause.
Change intervals
Oil degrades with heat, contamination and time. Short journeys, heavy traffic, high temperatures, towing and severe operating conditions can place additional demands on the oil.
Follow the service interval for the exact engine and market. A generic internet interval is not a substitute for the manufacturer's schedule.
Turbo engines need good lubrication
Turbocharger bearings and other components operate at high speed and temperature. Correct oil specification and level are therefore particularly important. After hard use, follow the manufacturer's guidance rather than relying on old myths about idling every turbo car for a fixed number of minutes.
The simple rule
Use the correct specification, keep the level within the manufacturer's range and change the oil at the required interval. That boring routine is one of the best things you can do for an engine.
