Where the heat goes
Combustion creates extremely high temperatures inside the cylinders. Some heat leaves through the exhaust, some is absorbed by engine components and some is carried away by the cooling system and engine oil.
Coolant flows through passages around hot areas of the engine. It absorbs heat and carries it to the radiator, where airflow helps release that heat.
The thermostat
The thermostat controls when coolant is allowed to flow through the main radiator circuit. When the engine is cold, limiting circulation helps it reach operating temperature more quickly. Once the coolant reaches the appropriate temperature, the thermostat opens further.
A thermostat that sticks closed can restrict cooling. One that remains open can cause the engine to run too cool. Both situations can affect engine behaviour.
The radiator and cooling fan
The radiator uses a large surface area and airflow to transfer heat from the coolant to the surrounding air. At low road speeds, an electric or mechanical fan can provide additional airflow.
This is why a vehicle can have a cooling problem that appears mostly in traffic but seems normal at highway speed. The available airflow is very different.
Common causes of overheating
Low coolant, leaks, a failed thermostat, a damaged water pump, a blocked radiator, a cooling-fan problem or a more serious internal engine fault can all cause overheating. The exact symptoms vary.
A rising temperature gauge or overheating warning should not be ignored. Continuing to drive can turn a relatively simple cooling problem into major engine damage.
What to do if the temperature rises
If your vehicle is overheating, follow the manufacturer's instructions and stop safely as soon as practical. Do not open a hot cooling system cap because pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
Once the vehicle is safe and sufficiently cool, the cause needs to be identified. If coolant is disappearing or the engine repeatedly overheats, professional diagnosis is the sensible next step.
Prevention
Check coolant level according to the manufacturer's procedure, look for visible leaks and pay attention to warning lights or unusual smells. Use the specified coolant type and service schedule rather than mixing products based on colour alone.
