The main pieces

A typical hybrid powertrain includes an engine, one or more electric motors, a high-voltage battery and power electronics. There may also be a conventional 12-volt electrical system for normal vehicle functions.

The exact layout varies. Some hybrids use a parallel arrangement, some use a series arrangement, and some can switch between different operating modes.

Starting and low-speed driving

Electric motors can produce useful torque from very low speed. That makes them well suited to starting the vehicle and supporting low-speed acceleration. Depending on the hybrid design and battery state, the engine may remain off during some low-load conditions.

The control system decides when the engine should start. The driver generally does not need to manage the transition manually.

Regenerative braking

When a hybrid slows down, the electric motor can operate as a generator. Instead of turning all of the vehicle's kinetic energy into heat at the friction brakes, some energy can be converted into electrical energy and stored in the battery.

Regeneration is limited by battery state, temperature, motor capacity and the control strategy, so the friction brakes still remain an important part of the vehicle.

Why hybrids can work well in traffic

Frequent stops and starts give a hybrid many opportunities to use electric assistance and recover energy through regeneration. The engine can also operate closer to efficient conditions in some driving situations.

That does not mean every hybrid gets the same economy. Vehicle size, battery capacity, climate, traffic and driving style still matter.

Maintenance differences

A hybrid still has many conventional vehicle systems: tyres, suspension, cooling, brakes and often an internal-combustion engine. It also has high-voltage components that require appropriate safety procedures.

Owners should follow the manufacturer's hybrid service schedule and avoid attempting high-voltage repairs without the correct training and equipment.

The bigger picture

Hybrid technology is essentially energy management. The system tries to use the engine and motor where each is effective, while recovering some energy that a conventional vehicle would lose during braking.
