Inputs from the engine
The ECU can receive information from sensors measuring engine speed, air pressure, air temperature, coolant temperature, throttle position and exhaust oxygen. The exact sensor list varies by engine.
These inputs tell the ECU what the engine is doing right now. The computer can then compare that information with calibration maps and control targets stored in its software.
Fuel and ignition
On a petrol engine, the ECU controls fuel injection and ignition timing. It can adjust those values depending on load, temperature and engine speed. A small change in timing can affect power, efficiency, exhaust temperature and emissions, so the system has to balance several goals at once.
Diesel engines use ECU control for high-pressure injection and other systems rather than relying on spark ignition.
Turbo boost and throttle
Turbocharged engines give the ECU even more to manage. Depending on the design, the computer can control boost through a wastegate, variable turbine geometry or other hardware. It also manages electronic throttle behaviour on many petrol engines.
This is why software is such a large part of modern engine performance. Two engines with similar hardware can feel different because their calibration is different.
Diagnostics and warning lights
The ECU also watches for values that fall outside expected ranges. When it detects a problem, it may store a diagnostic trouble code and illuminate a warning lamp. A code is a clue, not automatically a diagnosis.
For example, a misfire code tells a technician that the engine detected a combustion problem. It does not prove that one particular component must be replaced.
Why software updates matter
Manufacturers can sometimes update ECU software to change calibration, improve drivability or address a known issue. Any software change should be appropriate for the exact vehicle and engine. Tuning a car also changes calibration, which means the person making the change is altering a system that controls fuel, ignition, boost and emissions.
The useful takeaway
When you think about a modern engine, do not separate “mechanical” and “electronic” systems too much. The pistons, turbocharger, injectors, sensors and ECU are designed to operate as one system. Understanding that relationship makes many modern engine problems easier to understand.
